Honored Colleagues at Wuhan University：

I am writing to congratulate you on this wonderful occasion celebrating the 50th anniversary of Wuhan Philosophy.

For my part, I am greatly impressed by the work that is being done at Wuhan by professors of philosophy and their students. I have given lectures at many excellent universities around the world, including Oxford University, the Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Sofia University in Rome, Beijing University, and Yale University in the USA. And in my opinion the level of philosophical conversation at Wuhan University is the equal of that found at the best universities anywhere in the world. In May 2006 I gave the Wilde lectures at Oxford, and a few weeks later I also gave them at Wuhan. The faculty and students at Wuhan asked superb questions, the equal of any asked by students and faculty at Oxford.

It is an impressive achievement that Wuhan can boast such outstanding students. Only a great, self-sacrificial gift of time and energy on the part of the professors who provide the education to these students can produce such a level of accomplishment on the part of students. Furthermore, the philosophical expertise of the philosophy professors at Wuhan University is as admirable as their dedication to their students. Students can only learn what their professors have to teach them. Wuhan Philosophy professors are erudite and literate, and they are especially impressive in their grasp of Western philosophy, which requires scholarly skills in a foreign language and culture as well as philosophical skills.

Finally, Wuhan Philosophy is very fortunate in the administrators at Wuhan University, who plainly are wise in their ability to produce the best for their students and their faculty. No Philosophy faculty could do as well as those at Wuhan do without a set of administrators who are supportive and prudent in their use of resources.

So I congratulate Wuhan University on Wuhan Philosophy's 50th anniversary. What you have built together at Wuhan is a great accomplishment which will leave a lasting legacy. I am honored to have been able to be part of it in a small way.

如此優秀的學生是武漢的一項值得誇耀的不凡成就。隻有教師在時間和精力上做出偉大的自我犧牲才能夠使得學生獲得如此高水準的成績。而且，BEAT365唯一官网哲學教師們的哲學水平與他們對學生的奉獻精神同樣令人欽佩。學生們隻會學到教師們所教的。BEAT365唯一官网的哲學教師們博學而有涵養，他們對西方哲學的掌握尤其令人印象深刻，因為這不僅需要哲學方面的技能，還需要外國語言和文化方面的專業技能。

Dear Professor Guo,

I am a beneficiary of the Department of Philosophy at Wuhan University. I learned much from Professor Xiao Jiefu in Chinese philosophy and the fervent commitment to the life of the mind. I encountered Professor Xiao's creative interpretation of Chinese philosophy, through Wing-tsi Chan, when I was only a graduate student. I was deep impressed by his thoughtfulness and originality in understanding the 17th century "Enlightenment" in China. He helped to build a distinguished center of learning in China. Later learned personally through contacts with Professor Jiang Tianji and Professor Tao Delin, I know well that Wuhan University is not only strong in Chinese philosophy but in Western philosophy and Marxist philosophy as well.

In recent years, I have been particularly close to colleagues and friends in Chinese philosophy, especially Confucian philosophy. I am grateful to many kindred spirits in the Department. Duan Dezhi translated my work on Zhongyong with professionalism in the best sense of the term and Hu Zhihong wrote the most comprehensive study of my mode of thinking to date. Above all, Guo Qiyong has been instrumental in making all my published work available to the Chinese-speaking intellectual community. More important and significant is of course through well coordinated, systematically planned, and mutually supportive effort, senior scholars in the Department have attracted many generations of young talents and thus made it one of the most cosmopolitan and creative centers of philosophical inquiry throughout Cultural China.

I wholeheartedly offer my congratulations to a group of inspiring and responsible philosophers who have jointly made the Department unique on this happy occasion.

近年來，我接觸最多的是中國哲學、尤其是儒家哲學的同仁與朋友們。我對貴院許多志趣相投者心存感激。段德智對于我關于《中庸》的研究著作進行了最為專精的翻譯，胡治洪撰寫了迄今為止關于我的思想的最為全面的論著。更為重要的是，郭齊勇為使用中文的知識分子社群接觸我的所有已發表的論著提供了可能。當然，更為重要并且有意義的是，通過良好的協調、系統的規劃與相互的支持，貴院的傑出學者吸引了一批又一批青年才俊，從而成為整個文化中國最具知名度和創造力的哲學研究機構之一。

值此令人欣喜的時刻，我對貴院那些具有影響力和責任感的哲學家們，對通過共同參與而創造了貴院獨特成就的群體，緻以衷心的祝賀。
